Teams will benefit from a mix of individual skills development through professional instruction. Shooting, passing, stick handling, deking and agility are all covered in a 60 minute session. Players are encouraged to think differently – for example: I shoot my hardest when the puck is in this position, but how can I increase the size of the area where I like to shoot? This is extremely important as players have to learn how to shoot around defenders and trick goalies by shooting effectively from awkward areas.
Philosophy: The game of hockey is too structured in minor hockey. Many coaches have implemented excellent “systems” which for the most part has taken the risk and creativity out of the game. To combat robotic hockey, players must learn to create space for themselves. If you want to get noticed – be creative and learn to make a defenseman look for his/her jock! Individual skills are more important now than ever.
The Sports Training Hockey Academy, owned and operated by ex-NHLer Mike Kennedy – specializes in improving overall athletic ability while focusing on individual skills development. Our facility has stations that focus on target shooting, passing, stick handling, deking and agility and 2 skating treadmills!
The following skills are taught and developed:
- Wrist shot - quick release and accuracy
- One timers – power and accuracy
- Passing drills
- Stickhandling quickness and range
- Skating agility and speed
- Deking
- Specialized fitness and conditioning
- Video training
- Athletic testing
- Treadmills
- Shooting – improve quick release, improve range, head up, improve rhythm and tempo
- Passing – improve eye on target, release point, velocity, accept the pass
- Puck handling – loosen shoulders, feel the puck, expanded range of motion, radius
- Deking – head fakes, toe drags, change direction, fake and release shot
- Enhance stride length
- Improve recovery stride
- Increase knee flexion
- Enhance stability
- Efficient arm swing
- Improved puck control (while skating)
- Master shooting in stride
